Is It Too Late to Turn Back?

Shea

Shea orders Caen to inform their crew of their new course, while Jo goes with Captain Soren to deal with the rest of the Arethusian crew. Shea is quick with the execution, and when she’s done, she throws the former captain overboard.

There’s no time to waste.

But as Shea looks past the quarterdeck and out to the horizon, she can’t help but feel haunted by the decision she’s just made. Going to Lycos was more than a risk and docking in the capital city Acheron, there’s no way Ceto won’t find her. This could be the end for Shea Lara.

But as she watches Jo with her subjects and the way not one of the remaining naval officers rejects her, she knows this is what she has to do. They salute Jo proudly.

Shea can finally feel herself changing; two weeks ago she would have run just like Caen suggested. But now she’s throwing herself headfirst into danger just because of a girl. Paetre would be smacking her upside the head right now, telling her she’s thinking with her balls and it’ll get her killed. Pirates don’t do the right thing; they do whatever is in their best interest. Then why the Underdeep is she doing this? Maybe because Jo is her best interest.

And on that note, Shea readies her crew, crossing back over to the Duchess to grab the proof needed to fake her death from her cabin. The naval ship is in rough repair, but they’ll at least make it to Orena where they can take a smaller ship the rest of the way to Arethusa. It’ll take them a couple of days, but they’ll be there just before Shea, Jo, and the crew make it to Lycos. As a consolation prize for her crew, she allows them to keep the supplies stolen from the Arethusians, much to Jo’s displeasure, but Shea frankly doesn’t care.

The naval crew won’t be needing it all anyway, and Shea considers it compensation for these idiots trying to blow up her ship.

The rest of the crew, including Jo, withdraws from the navy vessel, leaving Shea the last on board. She shakes hands with Captain Soren, who surprisingly gives her a nod of respect.

“Protect her,” Soren tells her.

“For some reason, I always will.”

Soren smiles. “Good, and the proof? That you’re dead?”

“Yes,” Shea mutters and pulls out the two severed elf ears from her pocket. Soren’s eyes widen dramatically as she hands him the preserved ears, and he stutters trying to ask.

Shea waves him off. “Don’t. The removal of an elf’s ears is a great insult to my people. I bought those at a flea market in Lycos. They come in handy for faking your own death. The council will know they were only taken after you killed me.”

“Understood.” He closes his fist around them, looking a little green. “Good luck.”

“You too,” Shea murmurs and steadily crosses the gangplank back to her own ship.

They cut the ropes connecting the two vessels together.
